United by Music

On Friday, August 18, 2017, a young Moroccan man randomly stabbed people in the market square of Turku. To be exact: women. His motive had something to do with the weird religious beliefs that acting like that would be blessed by God.

It took only three minutes for the police to shoot the man in the leg and he was arrested. The wish to be a martyr was not fulfilled. Before that, several bystanders tried to stop the man and defend the victims. Two people died and eight were wounded.

My mother was passing the same spot just five minutes earlier.

The police have confirmed that the stabber had made a manifestial video, which, however, was not released on the Internet. It is thus probable that this was the first terror attack of its kind in Finland.

I wonder, what difference does it make for a victim for which reason she must die?

Most people do not remember that, in 1999, 13 people were stabbed by a heroin addict almost in the same area. One died, others were injured.

-------------------------

For this reason, last Thursday I wore a black suit and accompanied saxophonist Daniel Gordon, who played Warren Benson's Aeolian Song in the Turku Concert Hall. The aim of the concert 'United by Music’ was to allow all the people of Turku from different backgrounds to express their sorrow and respect for the victims together.

The concert was organised through a combination of individual volunteer efforts and the endorsement and help of Turku institutions. To name two of them, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and Barbora Xu, who plays the Guzheng, the ancient Chinese instrument.

The same day, all the flowers and candles were already being moved from the street. Life goes on and like in the case of 1999, these memories fade away, as they always do...

Insanity is a renewable resource.
